My Zurich Home For Over 30 Years

Right on the bank of the Limmat River and set in a beautifully proportioned square anchored by a wrought iron fountain lies the Hotel Storchen, a charming boutique hotel that has been called the best hotel in Zurich.   My favorite place to stay for more than 30 years, the building has been a hostelry for more than 650 years and is still the home of the Zunft zur Schiffläute (Guild of Fishermen), founded in the Middle Ages.

Today, the Storchen is one of Zurich’s most beloved hotels and deserves every accolade it has worked so hard to earn.  Fine service starts the moment you enter the lobby with the warm welcome of the concierge and receptionists.  Chief concierge Gennaro has been at the Storchen since the first time I stayed there.

The hotel’s kitchen is presided over by executive chef Fredi Nussbaum and his able sous chef, Cyrille Anizan.  Until February 21, they will host a lucky table of 4 guests each evening right in the kitchen for an exquisite 6 course menu with appropriate wines.

Here are a couple of typical dishes served at the Storchen that I photographed on my last visit in November:
